Grape Fruit Spread

Male pet rat with swelling/mass on side of neck?

About a week ago, one of my rats (who is male and 10 months old) had a red discharge around his left eye, it lasted a few days then cleared up. But yesterday I noticed a large swelling or mass that is located near his neck and shoulder, it seems to be about the size of a small-ish grape.

It’s really sudden, and I wondered if he could have swollen glands peharps? I know that rats get tumors often, but I thought it would have grown more gradually rather than so suddenly if it were a tumor?

I am feeling so upset and worried, I only feed my rats organic food, they live in a three tier cage, and both are lively and eating well.

These are my first rats, so I’m not sure what the probable outcome is, any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated as the vet can’t see him until Tuesday

Tumors don’t *usually* develop that quickly & the swelling could be from a number of other things, all requiring a vet’s diagnosis & treatment. As long as he’s eating, drinking & acting normal, hopefully he’ll be ok until Tuesday but if he can’t/won’t eat or seems to be getting worse in any way, try a different vet who can see the little guy right away.
